Most of today’s journey will be alongside the French Riviera, and
it is without question one of the finest panoramic stretches of
any railway in all of France. The three-hour trip provides plenty
of views over sandy beaches, charming bays, the blue waters
of the Mediterranean, and small towns. Even station names like
Antibes, Toulon, and Cannes evoke pleasant vibes.Â
This stunningly beautiful four-hour trip will be on three humble
local trains. So today is adventurous rather than luxurious.
The views, however, are non-stop gorgeous. You pass charming
bays, picturesque hillside villages, yacht-filled harbours and rocky
headlands, as the train negotiates viaducts and tunnels between
world-famous towns like Monte-Carlo, Merton, and San Remo.
Your modern Frecciargento train begins the journey at a
leisurely pace as it travels alongside the beautiful Ligurian

Keep an eye out for the picturesque villages of Cinque Terre
that come into view as the train emerges out of the tunnels

Your journey begins at London St Pancras.
With fast-track and lounge access, you board Eurostar in comfort. A three-course lunch with wine and champagne is served on the way to Paris, where a personal escort and chauffeured car take you to Gare de Lyon. After a pause at the legendary Le Train Bleu, board TGV Lyria in premium first class. Dinner with wine is served at your seat as you cross into Switzerland, arriving in Zurich for two nights in the lively old town.
From Zurich, the adventure continues on the Transalpin express. This nine-hour panoramic journey is one of the Alps’ finest rail experiences, taking you past Switzerland’s shimmering lakes, through the dramatic Arlberg Pass into Austria, and across the valleys of Tyrol. Next, the EuroCity express carries you to Ljubljana. The route follows the river Savinja and then the dramatic Sava gorge, with hills and mountains on all sides. The train itself may be modest compared to Switzerland’s luxury services, but it holds a rare treasure: a traditional Slovenian dining car, serving hearty classics like Wiener Schnitzel from a real kitchen. By early afternoon you arrive in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s charming capital with leafy streets, bridges and cafés along the river.
Your journey ends on the Istrian coast. From Ljubljana, a local train takes you to Rijeka, where your private driver awaits.
