Cogwheel Adventures
- to Alpine Summits -

The remarkable thing about this journey is not that it includes a four-course dinner in the elegant and historic Queen Victoria restaurant – but rather that said restaurant resides in a hotel on a rocky summit at over 2000 meters above sea level, reached by the world’s steepest cogwheel railway.

Your overnight stay at the fabled Mount Pilatus is one of two literal high points of this rail vacation. The other is the ascend to the highest railway station in Europe, situated at the dizzying altitude of 3,400 meters and located on a rocky islet surrounded by a mighty glacier and lofty Alpine peaks.

But there are also plenty of figurative high points. The first day’s journey to Lausanne in premium first class is one of them, with lunch served at your seat on Eurostar Premier to Paris, then dinner in TGV Lyria Premiere Signature as you speed towards Switzerland, and in between a personal VIP transfer service in Paris. In the Swiss Alps two splendid panoramic rail journeys await, one of them in Prestige Class with champagne and caviar complementing the views. And for many the ultimate high point will be the five-hour luxury cruise on Lake Lucerne onboard a historic paddle steamship where a six-course gourmet lunch accompanied by fine wines awaits.

You enjoy two nights in Lausanne, the mountain village of Wengen, historic and picturesque Lucerne, and finally a night on the summit of Mount Pilatus. Choose between perfectly located four-star hotels or luxurious five-star accommodation.  Chauffeured cars await you in front of every railway station and hotel.

Your alpine journey begins at London St Pancras.
With fast-track and lounge access, you board Eurostar in comfort. A three-course lunch with wine and champagne is served on the way to Paris, where a personal escort and chauffeured car take you to Gare de Lyon. After a pause at the legendary Le Train Bleu, continue by TGV Lyria in premium first class with a three-course dinner and wine at your seat. By evening you arrive in Lausanne, staying two nights in the old town with panoramic views over Lake Geneva and the Alps.

From Lausanne, the GoldenPass Line carries you towards the Bernese Alps. In Prestige Class at the very front of the train, you sit on raised panoramic seats while being served caviar, blinis and champagne. Vineyards, rolling hills and Alpine peaks unfold before you. At Interlaken, change to the mountain railway into the Jungfrau region, ascending to Wengen, where you stay two nights in this charming car-free village perched high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

The highlight is the cogwheel railway to Jungfraujoch, the “Top of Europe” at 3,400 metres. Emerging from the tunnel through the Eiger, you step into a world of glaciers and mighty peaks. More adventures await: hiking trails among Alpine scenery, the Schilthorn cable car with its panoramic summit restaurant, or simply enjoying the valley views from your hotel terrace.

From Wengen you descend by mountain railway to Interlaken and continue on the Luzern–Interlaken Express. The train hugs turquoise Lake Brienz and passes roaring waterfalls and towering mountains before reaching Lucerne. This medieval town, framed by snowcapped peaks, is your base for exploring its historic streets and the famous Kapellbrücke bridge.

A full day is devoted to the “Legend of the Lake”: a five-hour cruise on Lake Lucerne aboard a historic steamer. With only a limited number of guests, the service is personal and refined. A five-course gourmet menu is served on board—three courses wherever you wish on deck or in the salon. Champagne and premium Swiss wines flow freely, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

The finale is Mount Pilatus. A short train ride and the world’s steepest cogwheel railway take you to 2,100 metres. At the summit, check in at Hotel Pilatus Kulm, where sunset, sunrise and starlit skies unfold over peaks and lakes. Dinner is served in the grand Queen Victoria Hall, an elegant surprise on a mountain summit. After a night above the clouds, descend by breathtaking aerial cableway. A chauffeured car whisks you to the station for your direct train to Zurich Airport, where your flight home awaits.
