Your journey day by day
Start your vacation with a luxurious first day. At St Pancras,
ease through the station with fast-track and access to
an elegant lounge. Onboard, savour a three-course lunch
with wine and champagne. In Paris, a personal escort
will meet you at the train and guide you to a
chauffeured car for the short drive to Gare de Lyon.Â
After a pleasant visit to Le Train Bleu’s opulent bar, board
your TGV Lyria. Enjoy premium first class with a three-
course dinner with wine served at your seat as you
approach Switzerland. Arrive early evening and stay
two nights in the heart of Zurich’s charming and
lively old town.
Board a modern Austrian RailJet for a stunning journey through
Switzerland and Austria. Your first highlight is the ride
alongside Walensee, one of the most beautiful lakes in the
Alps. After a brief detour into Lichtenstein the train passes
through the narrow and dramatic Arlberg pass, where an
impressive fortress marks your arrival into Austria.
You travel in premium first class on the RailJet, with extra
space and comfort. You may ask for orders from the onboard
bistro to be served at your seat. The bistro has a good menu
and small but fine selection of Austrian wine. The journey takes
about five hours and you arrive for your two nights in
the heart of Salzburg late in the afternoon.
There is a fast, efficient and slightly boring rail route from Salzburg
to Vienna, but you will not be on it. Instead, look forward to an
unforgettably scenic detour on two of the most famous and
classic Alpine railways. First, travel south on the historic Tauern
railway through dramatic mountain landscapes, deep valleys, tall
viaducts, and picturesque villages.
Then, your train heads east on the famous Semmering Railway,
the first mountain railway in the world. It passes 16 major viaducts
and crosses more than 100 arched stone bridges, winding its way
up the mountain in sweeping curves. The route may historic, but
your train is a modern RailJet with premium first class, personal service,
and an onboard bistro.
In the 19th century, these two grand cities were the capitals
of the dual Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and ever since the 1850s
express trains have connected Vienna with Budapest. So, whilst
not a particularly scenic route, it is steeped in history (just look at
this railway station), Â And for a brief moment you skirt the great
natural highway between the capitals, the mighty Danube.
You travel in premium first class on a modern RailJet Express.
This means access to a lounge at Vienna’s railway station,
spacious and peaceful surroundings, and personal service.
The steward will be happy to serve your order from the bistro
at your seat. Indeed, there is just time for lunch before you arrive
at Budapest after a quick 2h 30 min. Â
Premium first class
on mountain railways
to historic cities
and grand capitals
Your journey begins at London St Pancras.
With fast-track and lounge access, you board Eurostar in Premier Class, where champagne, wine and a three-course meal are served at your seat. On arrival in Paris, a personal escort and chauffeured car take you to Gare de Lyon. After a pause in the opulent Le Train Bleu, board TGV Lyria in premium first class. Dinner with wine is served at your seat as you approach Switzerland. In the early evening you arrive in Zurich, where you spend two nights in the lively old town on the banks of the river.
From Zurich, continue on the Austrian RailJet for a five-hour journey to Salzburg. The train follows shimmering Lake Walensee and makes a brief detour through Liechtenstein before entering Austria via the dramatic Arlberg Pass, marked by a fortress at its summit. In premium first class you enjoy extra space, attentive service and the option of ordering from the bistro menu, including fine Austrian wines served at your seat. By late afternoon, you arrive in Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace and one of Europe’s most beautiful baroque cities, for a two-night stay.
The onward route to Vienna is a highlight in itself. Instead of the fast but unremarkable main line, you travel south on the Tauern Railway, one of the great Alpine lines, passing deep valleys, soaring viaducts and picturesque villages. Later, a modern RailJet carries you east across the Semmering Railway, the world’s first mountain railway and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With 16 viaducts and more than 100 bridges, the line winds its way up and over the mountains in sweeping curves. After seven hours of spectacular scenery, you arrive in Vienna for a two-night stay in Austria’s imperial capital.
The final stage of your journey takes you east to Budapest. Since the 1850s, express trains have linked these two capitals of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Your RailJet Express travels in just 2h 30m, with premium first class providing lounge access at Vienna’s station, spacious seating and steward service with meals and wine from the bistro brought to your seat. The train skirts the mighty Danube for part of the way before arriving in Budapest, Hungary’s grand capital on the river, and the perfect finale to your Central European adventure.
